iPod shuffle: The First Music Player that Talks to You

The World's Smallest Music Player
To create the world's smallest music player, we moved the controls from iPod shuffle to the earphone cord. This makes iPod shuffle smaller than ever, and the controls are right where you can reach them. So when you want to play, pause, or skip to the next tune, you don't have to fumble for your iPod shuffle--just follow the cord and press a button.

The First Music Player that Talks to You
VoiceOver will surely be the next big hit on your iPod shuffle. Say you're listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. Just press a button, and VoiceOver tells you. You can even hear the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too.

Easy-Access Controls
The controls are located on the right earphone cord. With command central strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music--and activate the VoiceOver feature--without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you're doing. iPod shuffle includes these easy-access controls, but you can also use headphones with similar controls from manufacturers like Scosche, Klipsch, V-MODA, and Belkin.

Your Music Library ... to Go
iPod shuffle is now available in both 2 GB and 4 GB capacities. So you have plenty of room to store hours and hours of music--up to 1,000 songs with the 4 GB model.2 That's a load of essentials for your workout or commute. And there's room for multiple playlists and audiobooks, too.

Multiple Playlists
You've probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. Now you can sync playlists on your computer with iPod shuffle, and play the perfect mix for your activity or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it's easy to switch between them and find the one you want without looking.

Let's Talk Color
The anodized aluminum enclosure makes iPod shuffle sleek and durable. It's even more colorful in gleaming pink, blue, green, black, or silver. And making its debut: the special edition iPod shuffle in polished stainless steel (Talk about rock star treatment). Even the iPod shuffle clip rocks. It attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, and backpack, making iPod shuffle the perfect fashion tech-cessory. And yes, there's still room for personalized engraving.

Multiple Languages
A French love song. A Spanish bolero. An Italian cantata. Your music library has songs from all over the world. That's why VoiceOver speaks 20 different languages. So it can tell you song titles and artists in the correct languages.

To Shuffle or Not to Shuffle
The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and you'll hear your music in a refreshingly random way. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn iPod shuffle off.

What's in the Box
Apple iPod shuffle 2 GB Green (4th Generation), Earphones with Remote, iPod shuffle USB Cable (1.8 inches/45 mm), Quick Start guide

5 out of 5 stars love it or hate it   November 21, 2009

I understand some of the criticisms of the new iPod shuffle, I just don't agree with them. I guess the new design is a love it or hate it thing. I love it. I've never had a problem with the controls on the headphone cord, in fact I think it's a really great feature. It's the first mp3 player I've ever owned that I could really control without looking at it, so even though the computer voice makes some silly mistakes, I like it too. The sound quality is great, it looks great, the size is right. Everything about this is perfect. I understand the complaint that people who want to use their own headphones have a problem with the controls on the cord. When it first came out there weren't many accessories for it, so you had to use Apple's headphones which aren't great. But it's been out for a while and other manufacturer's have come out with compatible headphones and adapters so it's really not an issue anymore. The idea behind this version of the shuffle is that it's small, easy to use, and affordable. It's all those things, and if that's what you're looking for, you should get one.

5 out of 5 stars Washer SAFE!!!!   November 11, 2009

I have read several reviews stating that it is not good for sports and that it is a bad product, but let me tell you, this item is awesome...
after going to the gym and of course getting it all sweaty, i kept mine in my sweatshirt and UPS!!! it went to the washer all and all including headphones, well after finding it at the bottom of the washer (of course when finishing all the cycle) I drained all the water and allowed it to dry for the night, then connected it to charge and IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!! so despite all I have read, my personal experience is that at least it is waterproof!!

5 out of 5 stars VERY high quality with JUNK headphones.   March 3, 2010

Apple needs to IMMEDIATELY stop shipping the crap headphones they've been making for this unit; they have killed its reputation. If they shipped it with their standard crap headphones and an Apple version of the Belkin inline controller, they'd have a winner on their hands.

I got it intending to throw the headphones immediately into the trash. I use an aftermarket inline volume control with a very inexpensive pair of JVC 'air cushion' earbuds.

Apple should study the JVC design. These headphones with this iPod are a podcaster's dream.

I love talk radio, and podcasting is the only way to listen. I listen while exercising and doing yard work/household chores.

This little wonder has no problems at all with sweat when using the aftermarket adapter, because now the volume and play controls are down next to the unit itself instead of hanging from your ear. Once the headset's deficiency is overcome, this minimalist setup is totally sweet.

So if you're looking for the perfect exercise iPod, this is it--but you MUST purchase one of the aftermarket inline play controls and plug your favorite headset into that. You will get better sound and no malfunctions.

And the sound is really good. The Shuffle has always been one of the better-sounding MP3 players out there. No change with this generation. On the rare occasion when I use this to play music, I'm struck by the great sound coming out of this little wonder. Remember the cassette Walkman players we used to think were the shizznits?

Adjusted for inflation, the street price of this little thing is about a quarter of the old cassette Sony Walkman (including the cost of the adapter), with many times the music capacity of a tape, sound that blows it away, and a size that is just astounding. I don't see how it can get any smaller except by doing away with the clip. I like the clip, but I wouldn't mind having a little tiny 'iPod pocket' in my jacket that is just big enough for the Shuffle without a clip.

Doesn't hurt that the Shuffle is also, hands down, the best-looking iPod ever made. I've owned them all, and currently use the iPhone 3g and the Classic (only the Classic can hold my whole music collection). Design-wise, next to the Shuffle both of those hot products are mutts. But you need a screen for video and large-library management.

My Shuffle came free when I subscribed to Dish Network. I must admit that my Classic never leaves the dock at the stereo system anymore. This little baby goes everywhere with me, and I don't even listen to podcasts on my iPhone anymore. The Shuffle saves my phone's battery for mobile web apps and communication. Plus it sounds better than the iPhone, and its battery life is astounding.

DO NOT HESITATE to buy this as long as you're planning to drop the headphones directly into the trash receptacle where they belong. If minimalist design and maximum portability are high priorities, you will love this thing.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion for the gym   December 9, 2009

I've been waiting for a small shuffle to take to the gym. Finally Apple has come out with the perfect sized shuffle. Yes, it's tiny and the headphones are expensive to replace, but it's perfect when you use it while running or lifting weights. It's not bulky and you can clip it to the sleeve of your shirt using the built in clip. It's literally the size of a big paperclip and weighs about the same. I like that it doesn't have video capability, because really who needs that? That also helps keep it small and lightweight. I travel a lot for work and it has great battery life. It lasted on my 6 hour flight with constant use and didn't die on me.

5 out of 5 stars i wish i could help you hate on this superb product.....but.....   March 26, 2010

at 47 years of age my work out years are a fair bit behind me . this is my commute to work and back stereo . currently loaded with fantastic modern creative jazz and popular music . i often wear this into places to shop for film and various goods . it'll hold over 500 songs (and believe me when i say many of the jazz tracks are lengthy) . i'm not the least bit self conscious about where the volume , pause and so forth are located . i can clip it on the inner sleeve of my short sleeve shirt and just go . it's so tiny but the sound is so awesome . see , i grew up on black and white t.v. with no remote control . forgive me if i can't (simp)athize with all the detractors here . it's even ten dollars less than what i paid for it . perhaps the wily young people disliked it in order to drive the price down ? of the two ipods i own , the other being a big 60 gb horse , this one sees virtually all the action . love it . hope you do as well . NO complaints .
